Gallery: 16 Well-Traveled Shipping Containers Add a Pop of Color to Gro...

When architects choose shipping containers to expand their office space, it lends a bit of credibility to their validity as a contemporary building material. Not long ago we reported on a move to use shipping containers for prisons in Australia, which local citizens criticized as being inhumane. But in our world, recycled shipping containers are not only cool, they are also downright practical. So much so that Group 8 architects actually chose to incorporate sixteen of them into their whitewashed Geneva offices without giving them any kind of exterior cosmetic help.

With only 780 square meters to work with, the Group 8 team had to be creative. So they stacked the shipping containers under the 9m high building to add an additional 200 square meters to their overall space. Instead of scraping down the shipping containers, the architects instead chose to leave them as is, at least on the outside, lending a pile of character to an otherwise bland space.
