Earlier this month the Green Dot Awards unveiled their 2009 winners, showcasing the most remarkable sustainability-focused projects, products, and services from the past year. From record-breaking superbikes to beautiful sustainably-built homes, to innovative new building materials, read on for 2009's best and brightest from the fields of transportation, design, products, services, and entertainment!
Transportation – Mission Motors
Mission Motors is no newcomer to Inhabitat readers. Last year year their Yves Behar-designed superbike smashed the world land speed record for electric motorcycles, so it was no surprise that they took top place in the transportation category. Their all-electric motorcycle has a range of over 150 miles and can hit top speeds of over 150mph.
Design – LivingHomes
Inhabitat regular LivingHomes, received awards this year in both the build and design categories, taking first place for their new KTLA1.5 prefab. Designed by KieranTimberlake, the project is the first in a line of 6 expandable, moderately-priced single and multi-family LivingHomes.
Build – DecoBrick
First place in the Build category went to DecoBrick, which repurposes plastic waste by transforming it into a durable water and fire-resistant building material.
Product – Parducci Wine Cellars
The Green Dot Award winner in the product category goes to Parducci Wine Cellars for their locally-sourced grapes, sustainable farming practices, earth-friendly packaging, and for utilizing 100% renewable green power. Thanks to all of their sustainable practices, they have earned the honor of being the nation’s first carbon-neutral winery.
Services – Sun, Light, & Power
Sun, Light, & Power took the lead in the services category by helping their customers to significantly reduce their carbon footprints through clean energy.
Entertainment – Eco-Diet for Design
This year’s Green Dot winner in the entertainment and culture category was Eco-Diet for Design, an exhibition that shows how to slim down your carbon footprint and move towards a more sustainable lifestyle. When are you going to get started on your eco-diet?
Other – Evergreen Recycling
Las Vegas company Evergreen Recycling took the top of the mountain in the “other” category. The full-service company is the leader of commercial, industrial, and construction recycling in Southern Nevada.
Concept – Super Sustainable City
Kjellgren Kaminsky Architects took top marks in the conceptual category with their Super Sustainable City. This futuristic vision of Gothenburg, Sweden incorporates everything from green rooftop gardens to water and energy harvesting roadways, towering solar arrays, and soaring wind turbines.
