Honda ^[4] is releasing an all-new, ninth-generation Accord for the 2013 model year, but what we’re most excited about is the 2014 Accord plug-in hybrid that arrives early next year. The 2014 Accord plug-in hybrid brings a hybrid powertrain back to the Accord lineup and is the first Honda plug-in hybrid ^[5] to hit the market.

Based on the new Accord sedan, the Accord plug-in hybrid is powered by Honda’s new two-motor hybrid system. It combines a new Earth Dreams 2.0L 137 horsepower 4-cylinder engine with a 124-kilowatt electric motor ^[6] and a lithium-ion battery. The system generates a total of 196 horsepower.

To maximize driving efficiency ^[7], the two-motor hybrid system allows the Accord PHEV powertrain to move seamlessly between all-electric EV Drive, gasoline-electric Hybrid Drive; and direct Engine Drive. Fuel efficiency for the 2014 Honda ^[8] Accord Plug-in Hybrid is expected to exceed 100 MPG-e and it has the ability to drive in all-electric mode for 10-15 miles with a total driving range of over 500 miles.

The plug-in Accord can be fully charged in less than three hours using a standard 120-volt household electrical outlet, and in less than one hour using a 240-volt “Level-2″ charger. Honda has also announced that the Accord Plug-in Hybrid will also serve as the basis for a conventional hybrid ^[9] version of the Accord Sedan, which will join the Honda Accord ^[10] lineup in the summer of 2013.
