Vollis Simpson has been fascinated with wind power since he rigged a wind-powered washing machine on Saipan during World War II. When he settled back home in North Carolina after the war, Simpson turned his passion for wind power into a full-fledged hobby. Now 93, Simpson is passing on his personal collection of 30 gigantic windmills to a community partnership that is building the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park in historic downtown Wilson, North Carolina.
