Metallurgists at the University of Utah have cooked up an ingenious way to produce solar cells using something that nearly everyone has right at home: a microwave oven. Scientists used a basic microwave, one that was previously used by students to heat up food, to create a nanocrystal semiconductor. Creating a typical semiconductor requires a lot of time and can be toxic. But this new method is cleaner, cheaper and more efficient than ever before.

    Okay, that may seem cool to some, but overall that is a very inefficient way to create a solar cell. 18 minutes in a 2000 watt microwave oven is a lot of energy. It also didn’t say anything in the article as to the efficiency of the solar cell, but if the solar cell is only 10 watts, it would take an eternity for that solar cell to at least break even with the amount of energy used to create it. Kinda cool, but there should be better ideas than this for creating solar cells.
