WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - Mayors converging on San Francisco

by , 06/03/05

World Environment day, San Francisco
World Environment Day is taking place this weekend in San Francisco! Sponsored by the UN, its on from June 1st – June 5th (hey UN guys: shouldn’t it be called World Environment Days?)

There are over 240 events schedules for the weekend, and many are free and open to the public.

Mayors from the world’s biggest cities including Shanghai, London, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and Capetown are arriving in San Francisco for the conference. Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown will speak, and San Francisco’s Gavin Newsom will host numerous events. Since over half of the world’s population now lives in cities, the urban environment is the major topic for this year. “Solving environmental problems shouldn’t be left to presidents” said Jared Blumenthal, director of San Francisco’s Department of the Environment.

The event looks very cool and I’m sorry to miss it. I’d love to hear from any readers who are able to attend.

Worldchanging is covering the event, so check it for in-depth reportage.
