Gravel paths and roads abound at this Japanese farm, and the family has 8 large industrial vehicles parked outside the house. Beyond the gravel park lot are beautiful fields and woodlands, which would be easily visible from inside the house — if you could see past the vehicles that is. The solution to the unsightly view was to block the machines completely with a yard – raised a whole story off the ground. A new second story yard was thus designed, creating a green roof [7] and shading the vehicles parked below while completely blocking them from view.

The home is a fairly simple cube with a no-nonsense facade that allows ample light [9] to stream in through its 360 degree windows. Large overhangs help regulate the interior climate by providing shade when necessary. The second story contains the main living area with the kitchen, dining, and living room, all of which provide views of the expansive lawn and the farmland beyond. On the ground floor, which could be considered “underground” are utility and sleeping spaces. Cooling [10] for the home is provided from well water, which is pumped up to the roof and then is used to water the lawn. The house’s connection with its surrounding natural environment is saved by blocking the view of the vehicles, incorporating daylight throughout the home and using water to cool the home.
