In a stunning example of adaptive reuse C. F. Møller Architects and Christian Carlsen Arkitektfirma have transformed an abandoned industrial silo in Løgten, Denmark into the core of a multi-story high-rise. Core services including stairs and elevators are located within the silo, and the individual dwelling units are attached to the sides of the original silo.
The new tower includes 21 residential units totaling about 3,000 square meters of dwelling space (about 32,300 square feet, which averages around 1500 square feet per unit). Because part of the original structure was left exposed, instead of completely covering it with the new construction, every dwelling unit has extensive natural lighting and wonderful views, including the nearby Aarhus Bay. No two units are the same, either. Public space, a supermarket, and a mixed-use center with other stores are located at the base of the building, making it more of a public destination.
Reusing existing towers seems to be a regular thing in Denmark, as well as in Holland. It’s great to see a structure able to find new life after it is no longer needed for its original purpose, and this example continues that great tradition.
