Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) [2] just launched the world’s first clean energy [3] atlas. The Global Atlas, introduced at IRENA’S General Assembly on Sunday, currently offers open-access information on solar and wind power throughout the world – and the creators plan to expand to other renewable energy resources [4] over the next two years

The atlas includes information on clean energy resources in 37 countries, including those which have no diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates. The internet-based platform will help countries tap into their renewable energy potential and will act a catalyst for policy development and energy planning. It will combine and expand resources such as satellite maps [6], validated data sets of national atlases and the expertise of each county’s national research facilities.

The atlas currently charts solar and wind resources but will, according to IRENA director Adnan Amin, include information on bio-energy, geothermal energy [7] and marine energy by 2014.

“In the next 10 years we expect a huge rise in the investments in renewable energy. The Global Solar and Wind Atlas will help us make the right decisions,” says Martin Lidegaard, Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Building, and President of the 3rd session of the IRENA Assembly.

“The Global Atlas provides a powerful new tool in international efforts to double the world’s share of renewable energy by 2030 to around 30 percent of the global energy [8] mix, he added.
