The Exposition at this year’s AIA Convention was overwhelming, to say the least. After traversing the floors for over three hours, I think we might have seen half of the exhibits, and perhaps only absorbed about twenty percent. For the most part, we did not find a lot of new developments from the many new green products and materials that were displayed at Greenbuild last November. However, there were still some cool things to take in, provided you could find them….
Many visitors were drawn to the “America’s Favorite Architecture” display. The exhibit was resultant from a survey sponsored by the AIA as part of its celebration of the first 150 years of the AIA. 150 US projects were selected by the American public as their favorite (or best known) contributions to the architectural landscape. In addition, the AIA has now partnered with Google Earth to incorporate many of these favorite projects as well as those of other member architects into the program’s 3-D imagery.
Lucifer Lighting, a company local to San Antonio, had a full version of the Push Button House by Adam Khalkin on display. Lucifer Lighting has a company wide commitment to sustainability and occupies a new LEED Certified Silver building headquarters in San Antonio.
A very cool-tech looking system of tube structures and fabric enclosures for retail or display by Eventscape dominated a corner of the Expo floor with its glow.
Obviously, there was much, much more to be seen at the Expo, and we just can’t bring it all to you. But check back in the next couple of days for more on the individual seminars that were held. While we only managed to attend about 10 of the 185 or so, there is a lot of great information to pass on!
