Alemagou Restaurant in Mykonos Takes Inspiration from Traditional Cycladic Architecture

Set on an idyllic beach on Mykonos island in Greece, the Alemagou Bar and Restaurant was designed to sit in harmony with its natural site, rather than exist in discord. Designed by Studio-K , the seaside structure was built in the island’s typical Cycladic style, which is characterized by whitewashed , smooth-edged constructions. Local materials were employed throughout the building, and come to include a reed-thatch and dry gourds that have been transformed into beautiful hanging lights.
Mykonos’ Cycladic architecture is about white cube houses built next to and on top of one another. Featuring smooth-edged corners and painted in lime-white, this traditional Greek design manages to keep buildings cool on hot days (upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit), and to protect them from strong winds.
In addition to the traditional style, the Alemagou Restaurant also features delicately shaped walls and a natural reed-thatched roof that allows sunlight and salty sea breezes to circulate. The open space also provides astonishing views to the turquoise Aegean Sea just a few hundred feet away. Some of the walls were made using locally sourced stones that blend with the surrounding mountains, and the interior decor has been kept simple and airy. The floors were fashioned using long-lasting, hardwearing screed, and the restaurant terraces gently roll out to the sand.
