Gallery: Alexis Arnold Turns Classic Books Into Crystalline Geological ...

American sculptor Alexis Arnold is growing crystals on classic novels. Crime and Punishment, The Catcher in the Rye and The Complete Book of Houseplants are just some of the iconic works that she’s turned into brilliant sugar-like sculptures by using catalyzed natural processes and the effects of time.

For her aptly named ‘Crystalized Books’ series, Arnold uses catalyzed natural processes within concise time frames, experimenting with various crystal growth patterns (ex. Borax crystals), forced oxidation and sun bleaching. By carefully mapping the changes and controlling the growth, she is able to yield pieces with an incredible geology and a history of their own.
