Gallery: Amazing Energy Belt Turns Excess Body Fat Into Electricity

Are you worried about those extra pounds gained over Christmas? Here is a conceptual eco-design that could deal with that dilemma by converting excess body fat into energy. Dutch designer Emmy van Roosmalen says the Energy Belt could be used to power everything from cell phones to pacemakers, cutting down on electricity costs while reducing the wearer’s size.

We spotted the Energy Belt at Dutch Design Week, where it was on display as part of a traveling exhibition on future design called The Nano Supermarket by Next Nature. Although this idea might seem crazy, all the show’s products use the latest technology available.

So how does it work? Artificial protocells take the energy from natural brown fat and convert it into Adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP). This chemical energy could then be used to produce electricity. Nevermind The Netherlands, we need this to combat the American obesity epidemic instead!

    Dear Emmmy,

I dont really get what this idea is about. How do you plan do specifically induce the \\\”burning\\\” of brown fat? Furthermore, even if you manage to do that by electric stimulation of your muscles via shocks (requires energy) and ADP is converted to ATP, how to plan to gather the stored energy in ATP? It would need to be converted to ADP again, but this energy is only used within the body to \\\”fuel\\\” other chemical reactions. There is no potential difference which you can use for converting the chemical energy into electric potential (do you want to stick electrodes into the body?)…..There is no current (nano-)technology which could possibly make such a system work.

It is true that we have to pose and reflect on the good we have. You have been such a wonderful blogging teacher as well as life lesson teacher and I so very much enjoyed your course in October, 2012. I hope one day I can meet you and Leslie in person. Have a wonderful holiday and see you next year!

I would like to reply to your comment Dan, and give some more information on the technical process you are referring to. You’re right in regard to the brown fat, brown fat is also called a ‘good’ fat, and is used by the body to quickly burn white fat and turn it into heat. The Energy Belt makes use of this quality of brown fat. By activating the brown fat, it starts the white fat burning process inside the body and can make a person lose weight.
The concept and technique is futuristic of course, but this is how I think it should be able to work, looking at the information available at this time. I hope I have given you enough information to explain how it should work =)

Brown fat isn’t the problem fat…brown fat is the internal fat that cushions the internal organs. Still an interesting idea, but it won’t ‘help combat the American obesity epidemic’… Oh and by the way…which ‘America’ are you referring to? North America? South America? Central America?
