Gallery: Amazing Skulls Made from Carefully Carved Pieces of Fruit

Artist Dimitri Tsykalov has created an incredible series of skulls by carefully carving away at common pieces of fruit. Marked by an aesthetic reminiscent of Dia de Los Muertos, these handheld sculptures make food waste pretty frightening — like your uneaten apples might come back to haunt you. Read on to stare watermelon death in the eyes.

The Annoying Orange had better beware: this crop of fruit is scary. Tsykalov is known for his provocative work with food: a series of meat sculptures he created look like something straight out of a Bosch painting. A number of things come to mind here. First, it’s astonishing how well some fruit lends itself to the shape of a human head. Second, this must be what happens to fruit that doesn’t get composted: it turns evil. Third: I’m scared.

These would make AMAZING bobbing apples for Halloween. I wonder how complex it would be to carve some up. Hmm, where’s that professional pumpkin carving kit I spent all that money on?

Seems fairly wasteful and ungreen to take perfectly good food and carve it up instead of consume it. Just sayin…
