America’s First Bookless Library Coming Soon to Texas

A new library is getting ready to open in Bexar County, Texas , but it won’t look like a traditional library. The new library will be small, devoid of traditional paper books, and judging from the architect’s rendering, it will look very similar to an Apple Store. The library, known as BiblioTech, will be the nation’s first fully-digital library, and it’s set to open later this year with a stock of e-Readers for visitors to borrow e-books .

The 4,989-square-foot e-library responds to the growing strength of digital book sales. Schools and universities around the nation have already implemented and offered bookless libraries since 2010. As the movement of digital media grows, we have already seen well-known print magazines, such as Newsweek, fold to the pressures of devices like Amazon’s Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook, and the iPad.
BiblioTech has partnered with e-book providers to deliver access to over 10,000 titles, and the hope is that the collection can continue to grow rapidly over the coming years. To begin with, visitors will have access to about 100 e-readers, 50 e-readers for children, 50 computer stations, 25 laptops, and 25 tablets. Borrowing the e-reader device will even be allowed for up to two weeks just like a normal library book. Judge Nelson Wolff, who announced the birth of BiblioTech, believes that this transformation of the public library system in Bexar County is “designed for, not adapted to, the digital age.” Hopefully the jury comes back to the judge’s comment with a positive review.
