Amsterdam’s Futuristic New Fletcher Hotel Blends Sustainability with Luxury

Amsterdam’s newly-opened Fletcher Hotel touts one of the most unique new designs, which was born of star designer Robert Kolenik’s new “Eco Chic” aesthetics. This four-star, nineteen floor beauty is completely round in plan, and made Kolenik’s job interesting at times. Displaying sustainable interiors that mix well with luxury, the Fletcher Hotel is certified Green Key Gold, which is the highest standard for sustainability in the leisure sector. [5]

The decor of the Fletcher Hotel [3] can be described as warm and minimalist. Robert Kolenik [4] capitalized on the round nature of the hotel’s floor plan with futuristic interiors that look like somewhere the Jetsons would have stayed. The curves of the plan are even reflected in the shape of room centerpieces like the great piano, which sits in the Sky Restaurant. The piano is entirely made of sustainable materials [6], and the proceeds from its sale went to save animals that would have been hunted for their ivory!

Materials within the hotel were very thoughtfully chosen by Kolenik in order to be as environmentally responsible as possible. Eco-board, which is made from agricultural waste [7], is used for the frames for the couches throughout the hotel. The down comforters in the bedrooms incorporate feathers from organic chickens. The pillows are even filled with soy-based material.

The modernity of Kolenik’s “Eco Chic” signature is something to be recognized. The Fletcher Hotel is a great example of how luxurious design [8] can combine with eco-friendly initiatives in a way that does not compromise aesthetics.
