In a line of packaging for TripTea, Andrew Gorovenko used the tea itself as the medium for his illustrations. With each scene representing a tea-producing country, the artist cleverly uses the product as the main ingredient for his compositions. Playing upon the name of the brand and the idea of a triptych, each side of the box displays a different piece of the the landscape, capturing a spirit of adventure and reminding the drinker where their steaming cup of tea began its journey.
By using the loose leaf tea itself to complete his exotic landscape illustrations, artist Andrew Gorovenko hoped to “capture the spirit of adventure of tea, the flavor of traveling, show an exotic and unforgettable world of tea in all its colors.” Looking closely at his representations of the Great Wall of China or Ceylon, one can see individual leaves, flowers and spices. The boxes themselves utilize the notion of a triptych, or an image in three pieces, to encourage the viewer to interact with the packaging and become interested in the narrative of the tea’s origin.
