Thrifty Dutch designer Anneke Jakobs has created something wonderfully ‘a-peeling’ with her recycled Chiquita Chandelier. Created while a student at the Utrecht School of Product Design, the eco-luxe chandelier consists of cut out banana shapes from ten Chiquita cartons that the designer rescued from the streets. All of the chandelier elements are secured with desktop paper fasteners. The chandelier is for subtle ambient lighting only, but we are most impressed by the designer’s creative use of castaway materials for an upscale, brand-subverting object.

indeed, this is a good contruction item. i wonder if it needs a mind that can do origami, i am totaly null at it. one other thing that strikes me is the setting. the dining table is huge and people could hardly get inside, the walls are of “beton” yet there is this immense natural light source from the window pane that makes you not so ill at ease in this room-box.
very interesting.

A must have for Banana Lovers!….
needs blood spatters for historical perspective
Chiquita was United Fruit- much killling done for UF via cia/us
Bet it would bring big bucks here in Cincinnati where the Chiquita hadquarters is located.
Wow… this is very cool! Great job, very proud!
Must echo Carole, bloody corporation, decades and decades until the present.
Ironically, I am very often put off by how negative the comments are at this great website. But, I simply couldn’t NOT agree with Carole. I am saddened by how many of we designers are disconnected from real world issues.
[...] lighting October 10th, 2007 chiquita chandelier ok, so this isn’t exactly the most functional piece of lighting, but how fun is this? designer anneke jacobs created this chandelier re-using chiquita banana boxes she found on the street. i love the thought-process behind this and the grand, over-the-top feeling she was able to create with some everyday cardboard boxes. fantastic. click here for more on anneke jacobs.
