After weeks of submissions and an intense week of online voting, we’re excited to finally announce the two winners of Inhabitat’s Lighten Up! Lighting Design Competition [1]. We received hundreds of entries featuring projects that employ LEDs in innovative and interesting ways, ranging from a colorful art installation that reacts to changing light [2] to a restaurant donning beautiful ceiling lamps [3] to a research campus adorned with LED back-lit wood walls [4]. We narrowed all the entries we received down to just 30 finalists, and then left it up to Inhabitat readers to decide which two designs were most deserving of $1000 prizes from Elemental LED. So who won? Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for…

Drumroll Please……….

COMMERCIAL CATEGORY: diTTo’s LED Acoustic Cloud Installation [5] — 2,439 Votes

The winner of the commercial category is diTTo’s LED Acoustic Cloud Installation [5] by Rolluda Architects [6]! This installation is designed for theaters and restaurants and is made from flame-retardant treated abaca fiber, which also happens to absorb acoustics. Rolluda Architects placed LED light modules on its facets to create a play of shades and shadows.

RESIDENTIAL CATEGORY: Air Turbine Rotor LED Light [7] — 1,913 Votes

The winner of the residential category is the Air Turbine Rotor LED Light [7] by Margot Krasojevic [8]! Her unique 3D-printed light also acts as a vertical axis wind turbine. The shell traps the wind and rotates the axis to generate and transform energy into light.

Congratulations to both winners! They will each receive a $1,000 prize from Elemental LED [9] to use towards their next big LED project [10]. Be sure to check out Elemental LED’s Design Center [10] for tips and tricks on how to use LEDs in your own designs, and create something just as beautiful and inspiring as our featured designers. Thank you to all who participated [11] in the competition!
