With consumer interest in greener gadgets [2] on the rise, Apple has refused [3] to include the iPhone [4] in a far-reaching green ranking system for mobile phones in the UK. The rankings convert manufacturers’ answers to a 63-question survey into a ranking of 1-5 for each device, factoring in energy use [5] and materials among other things [6].

Apple has refused to comment on its failure to take part. More than 90 percent of handsets in use are included in the rankings, according to the organizers. BlackBerry [8] products aren’t in this year’s survey, but the company has promised to participate next year.

Gary Cook, an IT sector analyst with Greenpeace International, which has targeted Apple with its “Green My Apple [9]” campaign, said, consumers “deserve to know the full story. While Apple has recently made important strides in eliminating toxic chemicals from its products and the reporting of their environmental footprint, it still lags behind others in transparency.”

Conducted by O2 [10] and Forum for the Future, the UK ratings puts the Sony Ericsson Elm as the valedictorian. Runners-up include that company’s Xperia X10 mini and Zylothe models, Nokia’s 1800, 6700 and C7 models, and the Samsung GT-S8500.
