Architecture For a Change designed a lightweight building to house the Community Church of Zandspruit in South Africa. A symbol of hope and safety in the community, the structure will replace the current tent structure that serves multiple community functions in the Zandspruit informal settlement. The design will be constructed from lightweight steel with a cross-shaped cut out to create a visual beacon and to allow for ventilation. To encourage community engagement, the project will incorporate material sourced from the Zandspruit community, such as a window made from gathered glass bottles. Over the next month, Architecture For a Change will crowd fund the construction costs for the project.
