As Hurricane Sandy demonstrated, rising sea levels, combined with increasingly powerful storms, can be devastating for New York City. While relief efforts continue in many parts of NYC, the storm has many architects thinking about how to better protect the city from future storms. Tingwei Xu and Xie Zhang, a pair of architecture students from the University of Pennsylvania, have developed a proposal to build an elaborate lattice work bib on the shoreline of downtown Manhattan with an extensive membrane system that would protect buildings from flooding.
