Gallery: Argentinian Mountain Home by Studio Ramos Sprouts a Green Roof

Tucked in the woods near a mountain lake in Argentina is a rustic retreat that melts into the landscape. The concept behind Studio Ramos design was to integrate with the surroundings, lifting the grasses within the home’s footprint to the roof. From the approach, this rustic home appears to be just a part of a grassy meadow lined with mature pines. But peeking out is a simple modernist home wrapped in local stone and pine that overlooks pristine Lake Gutiérrez.

While many dream of the rustic cabin in the woods, a cabin that becomes an integrated part of the environment is an important reality. The huge shed roof is covered in native grasses and flowers that thrive in the mountainous environment. The green roof helps maintain the disrupted habitat for species. It also tempers the indoor environment, dramatically cooling the home in summer and helping to insulate in winter.

Tucked beneath is a classic modernist home with a substantial bank of windows capturing light and views. The simple design highlights the finished materials. Local stones are used for the fireplace. The exterior is clad in cedar siding and interior walls are made from pine, echoing the surrounding forest.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The urban-forest interface is a particularly sensitive environment that can be easily disrupted. This home’s ingratiation within the natural fabric allows for the wild land’s beauty and viewsheds to be kept intact.
