"Art in the Streets" Recycles Cars and Ice Cream Truck as Canvases
How do you recycle a 1963 International ice cream truck after it’s done serving tasty treats? “Art in the Streets,” a new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, has repurposed one as an art canvas as part of an installation of art cars. Also on display? A number of other notables, including a repurposed 1966 Buick Special painted by pop artist Keith Haring and a 1960 Cadillac Coupe de Ville painted and adorned with cars by Angelino Kenny Scharf.
The center of the exhibit is the ice cream truck, which was intricately painted by “Mr. Cartoon” Mark Machado, an artist whose work has included everything from tattoos to graphic design for hip hop albums. “Art in the Streets” takes a “wide-lens” approach to tracking the evolution of graffiti as street art and looking at its impact on skateboard culture.
The exhibit runs through August 8.
