It’s looking rather cloudy inside. That’s because Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde [2] has the ability to create small, fluffy clouds indoors. He creates luminous masses of vapor that slowly float through rooms and hallways of buildings, transforming them into surreal, dreamlike landscapes [3]. The Green Room of the Veterans Building in downtown San Francisco was the setting for one of Smilde’s latest “cloud projects” — a delicate mass hovered in the middle of the room for a few moments, before it literally vanished into thin air.

The work is defined by ephemerality. It is meant to exist in the moment and after that only through photography [4]. Interested in the temporary and elusive, Smilde creates objects that confuse the viewer by being placed outside their natural context.

Using a combination of “frozen smoke” and moisture, the artist is able to create a cloud that can last for a short time — just long enough to be photographed. The temperature and humidity of the space is carefully regulated. The artist then emits a short burst from a fog machine, creating a cloud that dissipates in an instant. The artist’s clouds were recently listed by the TIME Magazine [5] as one of the top 10 inventions of 2012.
