Artist Berndnaut Smilde Creates Amazing Indoor Clouds

It’s looking rather cloudy inside. That’s because Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde has the ability to create small, fluffy clouds indoors. He creates luminous masses of vapor that slowly float through rooms and hallways of buildings, transforming them into surreal, dreamlike landscapes . The Green Room of the Veterans Building in downtown San Francisco was the setting for one of Smilde’s latest “cloud projects” — a delicate mass hovered in the middle of the room for a few moments, before it literally vanished into thin air.
The work is defined by ephemerality. It is meant to exist in the moment and after that only through photography . Interested in the temporary and elusive, Smilde creates objects that confuse the viewer by being placed outside their natural context.
Using a combination of “frozen smoke” and moisture, the artist is able to create a cloud that can last for a short time — just long enough to be photographed. The temperature and humidity of the space is carefully regulated. The artist then emits a short burst from a fog machine, creating a cloud that dissipates in an instant. The artist’s clouds were recently listed by the TIME Magazine as one of the top 10 inventions of 2012.
