With the advent of of newer technologies and the digital age, the creative arts have taken on many different inceptions lately. Tomas Saraceno of Argentina brings us back to basics by incorporating nature into his pieces, yet with an unusual twist. His latest creations enlist the hard work of lesser-recognized artists: spiders.
Suspended seemingly in mid air, clear Plexiglas cases contain spellbinding networks of webs and give us a glimpse into the artist’s creative mind. Manipulating the patterns of diligent arachnids by shifting and turning the structures every so often yielded amazing works and a collaboration among the species. The creations used many different types of spiders, even layering different species’ webs into the same piece. The utilization of space and light is also intriguing, as the sculptures are displayed in a darkened room so that the eye is drawn directly to each piece.
This installation is symbolic of the complex webs and entanglements of our everyday life, which, no matter how tangled, will forever and always be linked to the simplicity of nature.
