While several automakers have confirmed plans to introduce new electric vehicles that will rival the Tesla Model S’s 200+ mile driving range, no one has attempted to be as powerful – until now. Aston Martin has just confirmed plans to introduce a new electric version of the Rapide sedan that will have an astonishing 800 horsepower, which tops the Model S P85D with its total 763 horsepower. Even better, Aston Martin expects the electric Rapide to also have a driving range around 200 miles.

Aston Martin’s CEO Andy Palmer confirmed the news at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey, California. Aston Martin obviously knows that it needs to get into the electric vehicle segment if it wants to continue making gas hungry V-12 engines in the future, but Aston Martin also sees an opportunity to build an electric car that would be even more luxurious and powerful than the fully loaded version of the Tesla Model S.

“What Tesla clearly shows you is we haven’t hit the ceiling in terms of price,” Andy Palmer stated. “But I think it’s hard, though not impossible, for them as a relatively new brand to keep pushing up and to go into that super premier area.”

Aston Martin hasn’t revealed what the pricing for an all-electric Rapide could start at, but Palmer did hint to Automotive News that it could be priced in the $200,000 to $250,000 range. To compare, a gasoline-powered Rapide lists for just over $200,000. Following the debut of the electric Rapide, Aston Martin will release a second electrified model, the DBX.
