Researchers at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia have developed a sodium-ion battery that could make renewable energy technologies more affordable. The salt battery can be used in place of more expensive lithium ion batteries to store solar and wind energy so as to provide continuous power even on cloudy or windless days. According to project leaders Drs Manickam Minakshi and Danielle Meyrick, the battery “has excellent potential for large-scale use, including storing energy from wind turbines and solar farms for later feeding into local electricity grids, as well as use in industry”.

    Research and development to improve batteries is good work.
    But do not relate batteries to storage of renewable electricity, that is insane and unprofessional.
    Everywhere in the world, just renewable electricity has preference on the net, it is always the cheapest in the merit order of fuel mix. That is why, renewable electricity is always used immediately, and not stored.
    In developed societies renewable electricity has preference by law.

    It is insane to think that just generated electricity should be stored. Electricity is not generated when it is not needed. This saves fossil fuel. Fossil fuel is also the best way to store energy, for the coming decades.
