This past semester the Interactive Telecommunications Graduate Program at NYU’s Tisch school conducted its first ever course in living systems, which encouraged students to take on projects related to ecology, environmental data management, and, obviously, living systems. After six months of field trips (including a visit to Inhabitat favorite, The Omega Institute), in-depth discussions, and in most cases, very late nights on computers guided by Open Source Cities’ Marc Alt, the results were incredible. From location-based socially networked computer plants, to human breast milk, to moss-shrouded air-quality monitor polygons, the students covered almost every base possible – read on for a look!

We’ve heard of supermarket hydroponics before: window hanging, wall-mounted, and rooftop farm concepts have been abundant over the last decade. Truthfully, though, how many have you actually seen? Throughout 2011, the New York hydroponics firm Better Food Solutions plans to change that by installing a network of hydroponic greenhouses atop a number of grocery stores across the nation. The group, also behind the New York “Greenhouse Project” and Brightfarms Systems, believes that by working with grocery stores they can provide local food and further prove that hydroponics is the future of agriculture.

As east coast gardeners wrap up for the season, The Windowfarms Project has just unveiled two new home-sized hydroponic garden kits just in time for the holidays. The system allows anyone with a window and moderate sunlight to grow almost any edible plant under the sun, despite below-zero temperatures outside. Originally a web-based social collaboration experiment, The Windowfarms Project has brought together over 15,000 citizen scientists interested in designing for a better good.
