Christopher Simmonds has given an already gorgeous boathouse in Canada a sustainable upgrade that we can’t help but envy. The original boathouse located on Muskoka Lake north of Toronto was feeling a little cramped, so the designer gave it a second story guest room and a roof terrace, and an overall minor upgrade that used very little in the way of new materials. If you can’t help but dream about jetting off to a tropical paradise when you’re in an office board meeting, then don’t look up at these overhanging F-Light Lamps by Paul Coudamy. Made from the cutaway interior panels of decommissioned Airbus A300 planes, Coudamy‘s illuminating design adds just the right touch of aviation glitz and glamour to drab modular lighting. And thanks to the original design of the airplane, the lighting system can be easily expanded to fit any size room!

To draw attention to the excess waste produced by citizens, Environment Canada challenged 16 artists from the fields of fashion, hairstyling, cabinetry, and the visual arts to transform piles of trash into haute-couture creations. Nations around the world are abandoning nuclear energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, however the UK is considering plans to launch a new generation of reactors by GE Hitachi that recycle nuclear waste into energy-generating fuel. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), these new reactors have the capability to consume Britain’s massive radioactive waste stockpile while generating enough low-carbon electricity to power the country for more than 500 years.

Scotland just began construction has just commenced on the world’s first roll-on roll-off diesel-electric hybrid ferries at the Ferguson shipyard in Port Glasgow. The new environmentally-friendly ships will weigh in at 900 tons each and will able to ship around up to 150 passengers and 23 cars. It is anticipated that the ferries will be used around the Scottish isles, on popular routes such as the link between Skye and Raasay.

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw this glistening yellow cape made from spider silk. The un-dyed, untreated garment is the world’s largest piece of clothing made entirely from the durable natural material. Now on public display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the textile accredits its unearthly glow to the lady golden orb spider.

Have you ever wondered what the tree population and density of the United States looks like? This amazing map shows just that. Created by Josef Kellndorfer and Wayne Walker of Woods Hole Research Center in conjunction with the U. S. Geological Survey Science Center‘s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center and the US Forest Service, the map was generated based on a series of data sources including readings collected from space-based radars, satellite sensors, computer models, and simply counting trees the old-fashioned way. The map was created for NASA to help determine how the world’s forests have the potential to store more carbon in the future.

December 26th was not the end for these lucky pines in NYC. Artist Michael Neff rescued more than a handful of Christmas trees from a sad, dried out, sidewalk fate by installing them as a pine-scented installation beneath the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Setup at the highly-trafficked Metropolitan Avenue and North 6th Street, Neff’s installation infuses some much needed greenery into the stark industrial site.

The U.S. Green Building Council recently announced that it has selected HOK as an official design partner for Project Haiti – a building designed to LEED Platinum principles that will replace a Port-au-Prince orphanage and children’s center devastated by the 2010 earthquake. The new structure will provide a safe, healthy home for the kids of the Fondation Enfant Jesus orphanage and children’s center. The design, which was just revealed yesterday, will take full advantage of passive heating and cooling, require minimal maintenance, and be independent from the city’s unreliable power grid.
