Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida, is now home to the city’s first living wall: an 840 square foot vertical green masterpiece adorning the exterior wall of Saks Fifth Avenue. The wall has been designed and constructed by GSky, and is part of a greater beautification project being undertaken along Worth Avenue.

Have you ever broken a bone, had an x-ray, and thought the photo was actually quite cool? Swedish design students Sture Pallarp, Elin Hedlund and Emmelie Karlström, took the x-ray aesthetic to a whole new level and incorporated the film into a lighting fixture. Their X-ray Lamp is a conceptual approach that leaves much to imagination. It’s also an easy project for anyone looking for a fun DIY project for Halloween. Just make sure to break a funny bone!

Jointhepipe.org is a project that has created a system and community to help distribute water across the globe. The team designed a durable reusable water bottle to act as a symbol and represent a bigger idea — a collection of water bottles in different shapes that creates “the world’s longest water pipe”. The money from the bottles sold is used to fund water projects around the globe and to install water fountains in cities, restaurants, stations, etc. where they can be refilled. The team recently received the Dutch Design Award 2010 for their ingenuity.

On October 14th, British artist Damien Hirst’s butterfly painting I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds (2006) sold for 2,2 million pounds (3,5 million dollars) at Christie’s auction in London. This may not be such a shocking figure, considering his pickled shark sold for 17 million pounds in 2008. Nonetheless, it’s a piece of art evoking quite disturbing feelings and questions of life and death – not to mention animal rights.

SolTech Energy, a Swedish company selling solutions for clean solar power, was recently awarded “Hottest New Material 2010” for their unique home heating system contained within roofing tiles made out of ordinary transparent glass. The attractive house-warming tiles (somewhat ironically) give roofs a beautiful, icy appearance quite unlike anything else we’ve ever seen before.
