In March 2011, the town of Onagawa, Japan was devastated by a powerful earthquake. In the months that followed, Shigeru Ban Architects designed a temporary housing complex for survivors who had been displaced from their homes. Ban’s Onagawa temporary container housing is a truly innovative design. The Japanese firm created 189 residential units in two- and three-story apartment buildings that are built from paper tubes and shipping containers.

As people, we have the ability to adapt, create and record and spread knowledge – and that’s exactly what David Berman has done in his book DO GOOD, a must-read for any designer with a will to create change. Design matters more now than ever before when it comes to sustainable solutions for the world, and DO GOOD is a call to action that explores some of the most inspiring examples. Berman also answers questions like: “How did design help choose a president?” and “Why are people buying houses they can’t afford?” If you’re interested in ways that design can make a difference in the world, pick up a copy of DO GOOD today.

SOW Design Studio’s latest project truly exemplifies what sustainable architecture and an eco-conscious culinary practice can create. Located in the heart of Miami, Richard Sandoval’s new rotisserie, Kokoriko, was designed almost completely out of old reclaimed barn wood and tree trunks. The restaurant is decorated with plant fiber lamps brought from Barichara, along with natural cement floors and brick walls. The cuisine focuses in on free range, all natural chicken with Colombian recipes for an extra kick.
