This tilted “piggy” bank doubles as an awesome planter once broken. So, now after saving up all your nickels and dimes, you can put your hard-saved cash towards growing a little tree! Designed by Oji Masanori, the nifty green concept is an elegant form that minimizes waste, and depending on how much you save, also tilts in a different way to add to the experience of saving. We love the simple yet dynamic shape of the bank, and the way it transforms through the act of destruction.

World Water Day may have come and gone, but the importance of preserving water remains. There are some amazingly innovative ways to harvest water out there, like this award-winning Chaac Ha Water Collector designed by students in the Yucatan region of Southern Mexico. This portable water harvesting concept can collect both dew and rain, accumulating 2.5 liters of water each night from dew alone. The idea behind the design was to provide consistent, clean water to rural Mexican communities where access is limited.

Members of the indie band Bowerbirds have been trying their hand at sustainable design with this fantastic self-built studio project. Since 2007, Beth Tacular and Phil Moore have been constructing their very own cabin and music studio, using only salvaged materials and running it on solar power. The band recently found success raising money on Kickstarter, and they are well on their way to minting a new album within the green construction.

Baled is an amazing new series of photographs by Wesley Law that peers behind the scenes at a Goodwill Outlet Store in St. Louis. There, Law found a treasure trove of colorful objects that were left over at Goodwill stores around the country that had been formed into large bales of clothes and other goods. In the course of photographing the 5-foot by 7-foot bales, Law started investigating what each bale of trash was made up of, looking into what stories each one can tell us about ourselves.

This fantastic wooden Foosball table, Afrika Kicker, is a socially-motivated, mobile concept that raises money to help support youth activities in South Africa and Rwanda. Created by Misereor, the table is entirely different from its commercial equivalents, made up of pieces that resemble the playing fields scattered across rural areas of Africa. The design includes many of the typical elements you might see on a rural ‘pitch’, including a sandy and uneven ground, a tree, and a well in the middle—some of the players even play on crutches! Moreover, for every game played, 2 Euros is raised for the kids.

Using found objects and furniture, Forlane 6 Studio created these magical underwater sculptures that serve as hauntingly beautiful reminders of our mindless consumption. Designed by the artistic duo of Mathieu Goussin and Hortense Le Calvez, the pair behind the studio, the works are then photographed to appear both mysterious and ethereal. The discarded items are transformed into illuminating works of art that perfectly embody the old saying: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Taipei-based Miniwiz just unveiled a brand new system that transforms old bottles into gorgeous glowing green walls! Dubbed Verti-Cult, the system is made from 100% recycled Polyethylene milk and juice bottles collected from local schools in Hsinchu, Taiwan. In additional to providing beautiful ambient lighting, the green walls have the potential to improve air quality and even produce vegetables – just imagine waiting at a bus-stop clad in a Verti-Cult facade!

Designer Sasufi has given a series of reclaimed wooden doors a new life as part of a stylish and green interior belonging to a cute patisserie located in Melbourne, Australia. The idea behind By Josephine’s new look was to create a homage to the traditional nineteenth century French cafe while transforming discarded doors into modern interior paneling with clean lines. The reclaimed wood was first arranged in a patchwork formation, and Sasufi then painted them white to create a unified and contemporary design.

Using edible matter as her medium, art student Risa Hirai whips up mini models resembling full meals and even bonsai trees. Instead of using traditional paints and brushes to create her works, her off-beat palette consists of flour, sugar, butter, and oil. Once combined, the ingredients get baked in an ‘artistic’ oven, which then emits the delicious smell, adding to the overall experience of her artwork.

BRC Designs has a knack for creating furniture from recycled materials – and the studio’s latest project is a lamp made almost entirely from repurposed piano keys! The Wingin’ It Floor Lamp is made from an assortment of wood pieces salvaged from a dusty piano keyboard. The lamp is held together using nuts and bolts, and it lights up with 15 LED bulbs that consume less energy than a single 70 watt incandescent.

Designer Pani Jurek has constructed these brilliant two-tiered chandeliers from test-tubes which can be individually transformed by filling them with flowers, water, or anything that fits! The artist created the frame from two different levels of plywood before shaping an organic circular form with the test-tubes. We love that users can interact with the glowing lamps to make each one entirely unique depending on what is placed within the glass tubes.

Designers at Studio Ooms have been working on a fantastic social project in Indonesia that helps to lift people out of poverty while creating great recycled products. So far, the team has spent five weeks in Jakarta working with former street children on Ffrash, an eco project that involves collecting trash and discarded materials and re-using them to produce furniture. Addressing the huge problem of waste in the capital city, the designers have created creative educational projects in order to teach about sustainability and recycling.

Stephen Shaheen creates intriguing designs from discarded remnants of onyx left over from industrial stone fabrication. No stranger to upcycling, Shaheen uses these upcycled materials to create spectacular sculptural furnishings that resemble illuminated stacks in the form of a pyramid. The designs vary depending on the scrap materials Shaheen uses. The inventive Eistla series is crafted from onyx, while his Lou P. chair feature is a work made from 22 layers of Italian botticino marble. But while the materials differ, the central idea of utilizing all the wonderful salvaged remains of beautiful stone blocks remains the same.

‘Casa Box’ is a stunning modern renovation of a caretaker’s house on a Brazilian island that sits overlooking the coastline like a contemporary cube. The house was constructed by Alan Chu Silveira e Cristiano Arns Kato Architectos, who recycled leftover wood from the scaffolding of the structure to build doors, stairs and windows. They also constructed furniture to spread throughout the house. The designers created an interesting contrast by combining the straight angular lines of the house with the transformed wooden elements, adding layers of depth to the otherwise simple white box.

An anonymous Russian artist recently transformed the shell of an old computer into a brilliant miniature replica of a living room – complete with an oriental rug, a lamp, and a comfy couch! Other accents include a minute copy of the New York Times and a little toy gumball machine set against the computer’s circuit boards, which resemble a sheet of patterned wallpaper. The micro room is a fantastically creative way of transforming something unwanted into an imaginative and playful work of art.

Artist Barbara Franc transforms recycled materials and bits of wire into elaborate sculptures of living creatures from every branch of the animal kingdom. Her three-dimensional works range from a woodpeckers and kingfishers to horses, fish, and dogs. Each recycled work of art is a one-off that calls attention to found objects while incorporating them into a greater whole.
