Chinese artist Ai Weiwei‘s new politically motivated work ‘Fragments’ transforms salvaged wood taken from Qing Dynasty temples into a series of monumental installations. At first glance the works appear chaotic and jumbled – they are composed of dismantled sequences of pillars and beams – but from above Weiwei has recreated a unique 3D map of the intricate borders of China, commenting on the fragility of the country’s foreign relations.

Over the last five years architecture studio José María Sánchez García was faced with the challenge of restoring Spain’s ancient archaeological site the Temple of Diana. Located in the city of Merida, the Temple dates back to the Roman times, when it was originally built as a forum, and the central point of Merida. The renovations were designed by the Spanish architects in order to revive elements of the site’s unique place in history, while also establishing the surrounding space within modern architectural discourse.

Artist Doris Salcedo thought-provoking art transforms reclaimed items of furniture into politically charged sculptural work. In 2003 she took over a derelict spot between two buildings in Istanbul, stacking 1,500 chairs on top of one another that towered over passers-by like a small building. The chairs were piled in disarray, the huge number of items serving as a memorial to the many faceless members of society whose lives, work and even disappearance goes by unnoticed.

This USB flash-drive design combines a simple safety pin with a 4GB computer memory stick to create a simple and functional way to keep tabs on your mini gadget. The device, called Bulavkus, is the latest in a series of memory stick reinventions from Art Lebedev Studio. “For finding Bulavkus in a flash,” says the studio, “simply fasten to any fabric material and spare yourself frustration of digging through pockets.”
