Recent advances in 3D printing technology have resulted in plenty of breakthroughs in the fields of medical science and prosthesis, but 3D printing is also contributing to the art world in new and unexpected ways. Sculptor Marco Mahler recently collaborated with mathematician Henry Segerman to produce a collection of the world’s first fully 3D-printed mobiles, and they’re pretty impressive. As Mahler explains on his website, the mobiles come out of the 3D printer completely assembled, and their balance points were calculated to 1/1000th of a millimeter. All of the mobiles are now available for sale through Mahler’s and Segerman’s shop at Shapeways.

As the death toll in the Rana Plaza building collapse outside the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka continues to climb, the connection between the decisions we make as consumers and the loss of life is becoming harder to ignore. Self-policing by corporate social-responsibility programs isn’t working, and it’s our insatiable desire for more fast fashion that is fueling cost-cutting measures that lead to unthinkable tragedies like the one in Bangladesh. Although we aren’t directly responsible for the negligence that led to this particular incident, by supporting the industry that continues to drive prices down at the expense of workers’ lives, we are all complicit.

As a fourth-generation New York builder, Mark Jupiter has plenty of stories to tell, but instead of writing in a journal, Jupiter shares his tales through each of his reclaimed furniture pieces, which he’ll be showcasing this May at BKLYN Designs 2013. Using recycled materials that are just as rich in history as they are in grain, Jupiter produces one-of-a-kind or custom pieces that no big box store could ever possibly replicate. So head on down to BKLYN Designs 2013 next month if you’d like to learn more about Jupiter’s work.

We’re gearing up for BKLYN Designs 2013, which kicks off in DUMBO on May 10, and one the designers we’re most excited to check out is woodworking studio Bien Hecho, which was founded by John Randall in 2006. The Brooklyn-based studio produces gorgeous and understated furniture using reclaimed materials. Bien Hecho bridges past and present with contemporary designs made with quality wood such as cedar and pine harvested from water towers and other sources. So save your pennies and head out to BKLYN Designs next month to check their latest work.

Looking for an eco-friendly dress that supports a good cause, and won’t break the bank? We recently discovered Supezas, an inspiring eco-fashion company that works with rural tribal women to make customized silk dresses out of “peace-silk.” For the uninitiated, peace-silk (also sometimes called “Ahimsa silk” or “Tasar silk”) is a cruelty-free silk fabric that’s made without killing silkworms. Supezas’ dresses also bring fair wages and sustainable development to impoverished communities and are helping to revive the dying art of hand-weaving. Supezas has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to introduce their latest collection of personalized silk dresses; read more about them and support their cause!

April Fools was almost a week ago, but we couldn’t resist sharing one of our favorite fake news stories of the week. ThinkGeek announced the release of a newPlay-Doh 3D printer that works in tandem with the iPlay-Doh 3D app that you download to your iPad to create any design you can dream up. The (imaginary) device can print up to three colors at once by blending them like soft-serve ice cream. It’s easy enough to imagine this product becoming a reality, and it’s probably only a matter of time before toy companies begin marketing the wonders of 3D printing to kids.

In response to the horrific gang rape in Delhi last December, three engineering students have come up with anti-rape lingerie that will deliver an electric shock to a would-be attacker. The underthings, named SHE (Society Harnessing Equipment), are also equipped with GPS and the ability to text emergency services and the girl’s parents to alert them of her location and situation. The trio created the electro-shock underwear because they felt helpless that the government wasn’t doing enough to prevent rape. While these electro-undies address the symptom and not the root cause of rape, they at least represent a step towards protecting India’s women.

We live in a technology-obsessed world in which powering down is a difficult thing to do — and that’s exactly why observing Earth Hour is so important. At 8:30-9:30 PM local time tonight, people around the world will shut their lights off and reflect on how we can protect and appreciate the Earth. What started seven years ago in one city in Australia has grown into a worldwide event. Last year, 152 countries participated in Earth Hour. For Earth Hour 2013, our parenting sister site, Inhabitots, has come up with a long list of ways you can celebrate Earth Hour with the whole family. Click through to see the whole list!

Istanbul’s Bayrampasa municipality has claimed the world record for knitting the world’s largest sweater. Inspired by National Sweater Day, which is celebrated in Canada every February 9, the 151-foot-long striped sweater is part of a campaign by the Turkish government to encourage its people to lower their thermostats and wear warmer clothing. Ninety people collaborated to knit the sweater in 30 days, using about 1,100 pounds of wool yarn.

Designer Roberto Gil’s new Dumbo Double Murphy Bed, by Casa Kids, is sure to be a game-changer kids with small square-footage. Folding away into a compact, 12” deep cabinet, the bed is sturdy enough to hold the weight of two adults. The frame is also so light an unobtrusive, children are able to neatly fold the bed away on their own, leaving ample space for playtime until it’s time for bed.

New York Fashion Week designs are often peppered with inspiration—but perhaps none quite so original as designer Gretchen Jones’ (winner of Season 8 Project Runway) latest designs. Made of about 70% ethical materials, the organic cottons, hand-loomed resistant-dyed batiks and hand-painted vistas of the setting sun were inspired by two well-known Joans—Didion and Baez. When Jones wasn’t designing she used her downtime to read Didion’s “Where the Kissing Never Stops,” an essay about Joan Baez’s early years, which in-turn had her listening to Baez’s “Any Day Now”. The result is uniquely Jones/Joan’s—an eclectic, confident and of course, feminine mix.

Woodman, who spent much of her career studying the multifaceted role of women, makes for a complex homage in Rae’s latest collection.

Few options of escape were available to the trapped workers: every exit except one was locked and most windows were barred, leaving many Americans to make comparisons to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fires of 1911. With a shoe factory fire claiming 25 lives in another nearby city, the Pakistani manufacturing industry is now under scrutiny.

A new study suggesting obese children are prone to learning difficulties has parents and the media’s attention. The the National Institutes of Health-supported study published in Pediatrics indicates that kids with metabolic syndrome (MetS) had “significantly lower arithmetic, spelling, attention and mental flexibility and a trend for lower over all intelligence.” MetS encompasses a group of risk factors that occur together, most notably central obesity.

The best way to survive the winter is to think about something else–just ask Lauren Moffatt. The designer’s line up for New York’s Fashion Week were a throwback to–1960’s lawn games, of course! Preppy tennis dresses and colorful separates were done with clean 1960′s lines and a definite vintage-air, while a modern color palette left viewers thinking of anything but the coming winter months. Just close your eyes and think about lemonade and squash—it will be summer again before you know it.
