Japanese brand Bunaco uses environmentally friendly techniques to produce finely designed home products from ribbons of beechwood. Founded in 1956 in the Aomori region of Japan, Bunaco uses an innovative artisanal process to create stunning shapes with wood that would otherwise be unusable. We caught up with Bunaco at the Tohoku to the Future exhibition during Tokyo Design Week.

Furniture label See-Saw reclaims discarded wood and uses it to create colorful, joyful, and appealing furnishings. They recently released their first collection at DESIGNTIDE Tokyo, where they presented 4 products: a chair, table, stand and a series of trays. All of these objects were designed by the Japanese studio PANTALOON, Ryohei Yoshiyuki, and Atsushi Suzuki.

For more than 130 years, Kaikado has been producing hand-made Japanese tea caddies designed to last for generations. Last week we visited Kaikado’s shop in Kyoto, where Takahiro Yagi, the 6th generation of tea caddy makers, showed us the wonders of  “Chazutsu” and told us about the company’s amazing history.

Three young designers working under the name Masiosare Studio are creating green products that mix humor and Mexican identity with a cradle-to-cradle design approach. Their Ms line is comprised of 4 collections that use 100% recyclable or biodegradable materials – mostly stainless steel and felt. Their products are laser-cut flat pack objects, which are packaged in recycled paper envelopes and are easy to assemble (and disassembled when their life cycle is over) by the user. Even their lamps use high-density LEDs that consume less energy and last longer that any regular light bulb. Read on for a closer look!

Fábrica Social (social factory) is a Mexican non-profit NGO focused on promoting creative and economic liberty for female textile artisans through the development of sustainable co-ops. Founded in 2006 by designers Emilienne Limón and Dulce Martinez, Fábrica Social conserves and strengthens traditional craftsmanship and commercializes the co-op’s products under a fair trade scheme through stores in Mexico and abroad, as well as in their own showroom which just opened last week in Mexico City’s hip Roma neighborhood.

During this year’s ICFF, Plywood Office presented Hammy, an outdoor hammock, bench and planter, built together in one sleek piece of outdoor furniture. Set as part of the spectacular Model Citizens show at the Chelsea Art Museum, we couldn’t help but notice onlookers being seduced by the Hammy’s call to just lie down and take a break from all the design hubbub.

BRC Designs just sent us their latest project — the Interweb Chair — which features a woven web-like seat made from 1,100 feet of coaxial cables found in an abandoned warehouse. The white color was obtained by stripping away the black outer core and copper shield, and the cables were then woven through 64 aluminum grounding bars, making this chair a true piece of “industrial craftsmanship”.

The Reskate project rescues abandoned skateboards and transforms them into beautiful works of art that will make you want to skate again. The project was launched by a group of artists who sought to give battered and broken boards new life — working under the name Nube, the team restored a set of boards into remarkable examples of recycled design, which will be showcased at the Pantocrator Gallery in Berlin.

Piet Hein Eek’s body of work has been dedicated at large to re-using materials like wood to create unique designs. During this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, he showcased his studio’s new designs at the Spazzio Rossana Orlandi. After purchasing a big quantity of beams, Eek began a long process of designing, experimenting and producing that resulted in furniture pieces like benches and armchairs that salvage the material and make beautiful pieces of green design.
