The Urban Renewal Initiative in New Delhi, India, is a program that promotes the conservation and re-use of buildings and public spaces in historic cities in the Muslim World. The restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures and public spaces is undertaken in ways that can spur economic and cultural development. Individual project briefs go beyond mere technical restoration, addressing the questions of the social and environmental context, adaptive re-use, institutional sustainability and training. In keeping their philosophy, their latest initiative focuses on revitalizing three significant historical sites to form a cohesive preservation movement that includes the: Humayun’s Tomb, Nizamuddin Basti, and Sunder Nursery. The project uses public-private partnerships to create holistic conservation efforts, empowered by the local community and stakeholders.
