The auto world is buzzing today about Tesla‘s highly-anticipated Model X family-sized vehicle, which was unveiled just last night. Built for parents with a need for speed, this car breaks the mold for crossover vehicles with “falcon wing” doors, a completely web connected digital interface, an ultra-performance dual motor all-wheel drive, and room for seven passengers. All of this comes at a price though since the car starts at around $50,000, but from the looks of this sexy all-electric crossover, it will be money well-spent.

Through an extremely in-depth report, paired with dazzling visual representations, design and think tank group Rollerhaus imagined an eco-centric future vision of Chicago that is without cars, with new systems for energy and water, and built in a whole new architectural language. Their project was started in response to the Living Future Institute’s Living Cities competition, whose challenge was to conceptualize what a city of the future may look like if it work like a certified Living Building. Their interpretation of a reclaimed eco-architecture city — featuring reused parts of building facades and billboards pieced onto skyscrapers — drew a lot of controversy, but we echo Rollerhaus in their proposal, which begged the question: Is a sustainable city really the picture perfect one we’ve seen in past architectural movements?

Groopti – the website that combines crowdsourcing with bespoke manufacturing – just unveiled its latest cardboard creation, this time from designer Svetlana Kozhenova. Simply called “ECO” this modular set can be used to create tables, chairs, benches, or lounges with slim slots for storing magazines or books. These crevices give ECO blocks the appearance of a perfectly geometric fractured rock, but with the added green benefit of being crafted entirely from recycled cardboard!

Greenbiz.com recently released their free, downloadable “State of Green Business 2012″ report and some of the statistics are quite surprising. The report begins by explaining the stalemate on green progress by saying that “…sustainable business is suffering a recessionary hangover.” The study goes on to look at 20 key indicators, such as organic agriculture, e-waste, and  toxic emissions, to determine whether US businesses are “swimming”, “sinking”, or “treading water”. With 80% of the indicators getting a “Tread” or “Sink” rating, this is a big wake up call that most big companies are not doing their part to make progress towards a sustainable future.

Today Groopti expanded their fun cardboard furniture series with their brand new Urban Tree coat hanger. The design was conceived by Gerardo Belmonte and then selected for production using Groopti’s method of crowdsourcing opinions from design enthusiasts. The Urban Tree is composed of 6 legs and 5 rings that are machine cut from 90% recycled corrugated cardboard. Each piece is cut from layers of corrugated board to ensure that the coat stand is extremely sturdy, and the legs and rings can be easily assembled without screws, nails, or adhesives.

Power Pipe is a brilliant, easy-to-install heat exchanger that can save a bundle on home energy costs by using hot drain water to heat incoming cold water. The team at Universal Display Corporation recently unveiled prototypes of a sleek, modular OLED kitchen light that blows away a set of environmental specifications proposed in a challenge funded in part by the US Department of Energy. OLED technology has been progressing at high-speed toward commercial viability in the last few years, but researchers have had trouble perfecting white lights that are bright, long-lasting, and energy-efficient. The undercabinet lighting created by Universal Display is a major engineering achievement – it matches the typical ratings of a CFL (compact fluorescent) bulb, but with the added benefits of light source being paper-thin and mercury free!
