Inhabitat recently toured the future site of Freshkills Park, a reclaimed landfill in New York City’s Staten Island that is currently being capped and repopulated with native flora and fauna. The reclamation project by James Corner Field Operations will transform what once was the world’s largest landfill into New York’s second largest park, and phase one should open within the next ten years. During our visit, Inhabitat got a glimpse of the panoramic views available from the South and North Mounds, witnessed the return of native wildlife, and got some insight into gas generation and the possible reuse of Department of Sanitation infrastructure. The Inhabitat team has been closely monitoring recently completed Passive House projects in the United States and abroad, anxiously awaiting each new energy efficient residence’s opening. The Passiv Haus movement, which champions a sustainable building system that originated in Germany, has recently gained steam in the United States, particularly in the New York City area. New York Passive House, like other local chapters of the Passiv Haus Society, was created to promote the movement’s standards in the local area by creating an open forum for designers, construction professionals, manufacturers, clients and anyone with an interest in green building. Every year, tons of waste is borne out of packaging materials for most consumer goods, including designer furnishings and lighting fixtures that claim to be green products. While some companies spend tremendous amounts of research and development on designing less wasteful packaging, innovative designers such as David Gardener choose to go a step further and merge product and packaging design. Gardener’s Packaging:Lamp reduces production waste to negligible levels; the container in which electronic components are distributed becomes the body of the fixture upon assembly. Molded from paper pulp into a traditional desk lamp form, the packaging has a do-it-yourself quality that also evokes a well-known aesthetic, serving as its own advertisement. Sometimes, the most innovative lighting fixtures don’t come from the stable of perfectly finished, sleek task lights at design shows, but from the recycling heaps and hardware stores on the streets of Brooklyn. Pratt Industrial Design student Mayang Anggraeni often takes less glamorous post-consumer materials and transforms them into stylish objects. She recently showcased her Float Light fixture at the 2011 Pratt Student Show, drawing much-deserved attention from visitors, including the Inhabitat team. The fist-sized plastic fixtures, fashioned from recycled plastic detergent bottle parts, LED lamps and batteries, elegantly demonstrate the potential of upcycling commonplace objects into creative, high-design objects fit for any showroom.
