S2BH Creates Colorful Tableware Using Recycled Corian

Architects Steve Buetow and Scott Helmes from Minnesota have teamed up to make these fabulous pieces of Corian tableware in a range of colors and designs. The guys were laid off from their full time jobs and decided to use the time to form S2BH, a partnership which focuses on creating functional art from recycled and industrial material. Fascinated by Corian’s food-safe and flexible qualities, S2BH created these unique bowls and baskets which are on sale to the public at the Walker Art Center gift shop in Minneapolis. Their other projects include vases made from recycled test tubes and scrap aluminium — we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

Designer Rabih Hage Uses Leftover Corian to Create Fantastic Furniture

London based designer and architect Rabih Hage has used scrap pieces of Corian to make these fabulous pieces of angular furniture. The designs were presented by DuPont Corian at the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair to celebrate their new color palette. Rabih wanted to use off-cuts and pieces of the material to make something beautiful, saying: “I have always been fascinated by unused material or discarded cuts of stone, wood or metal, whether cheap or expensive. Reusing these materials as a luxury product and treating the off-cuts as something precious is my real motivation.” He emphasized the spirit of upcycled design by noting “a discarded material is as noble and precious as a newly polished stone.”

British Car Park Company Installs the Largest Urban Solar Array in the UK

Working to counter the inherently environmentally destructive nature of a car-based commute, British firm Town Centre Car Parks has committed to making their public car parks environmentally friendly by installing the largest urban solar photovoltaic array in the UK. Situated on the roof of the Clarence Dock multi-story car park in Leeds city center, the system provides 15% of the car park’s electricity, reducing carbon emissions by 55 tonnes each year. The company is also trialling the use of LED lighting in some of their car parks to further reduce their impact on the environment. Additionally, Town Center has started to install electric vehicle charging stations in their car parks.

INFOGRAPHIC: Understanding Biomass as a Renewable Energy Source

UK-based renewable energy company Duncan Renewables made this great infographic which highlights the benefits of biomassfor domestic consumers. The infographic shows information about biomass use around the world – a hot topic since the introduction of the green deal by the UK government this month. The graphic demonstrates a range of statistics about how biomass can help the environment and provide a more sustainable heating source compared to fossil fuels. Duncan Renewables has mainly installed biomass boilers in large-scale commercial settings such as farms and leisure facilities, but as the infographic shows, with domestic customers now able to get help with the cost of biomass boiler installation it is becoming a more popular technology used for heating normal homes. Jay Watson Makes Pixelated Furniture from Recycled Corian Samples

Using recycled Corian samples from kitchen designers and sustainably sourced birch, Oxfordshire-based designer Jay Watson built this beautiful credenza. Corian is a popular material for kitchen countertops. Watson collected the Corian samples from kitchen designers and Corian® fabricators, proving that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The colorful tiles create a pixelated pattern on the credenza, which features three drawers and a cupboard.
