Designer Mark McQuilten, of Architectus, has created this amazing installation made of discarded circuit boards for the State of Design festival in Melbourne, Australia. Far from a haphazard arrangement, the “Melbatron” was inspired by a satellite image of the Aussie city at night. Reusing old circuit boards and motherboards — whose layouts and components are inherently reminiscent of a miniature metropolis — McQuilten recreated Melbourne’s distinct Hoddle grid and back lit it, allowing light to peek through the holes and transparent areas of the board. Recycled plywood was used to anchor the construction, and roads have been painted throughout the luminous piece to articulate motorways and city landmarks while making a modern-day reference to the Nolli diagram. The installation is part of the Raising The Bar exhibition and will be on display at The Order of Melbourne.
