On September 8, 2012 North Hempstead, New York unveiled the latest addition to its Parks and Recreation Center – a LEED Platinum-certified community center complete with a solar carport, geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and rooftop rainwater collecting bins for on-site irrigation. The Yes We Can community center also features a TV studio, a senior lounge, two NBA-sized basketball courts, an internet café, fitness and dance studios, and much more. Towns across the Nation have invested in new Parks & Recreation buildings that meet strict energy standards, and North Hempstead’s new community center is a shining example of the trend that stresses the importance of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
