Today, green spaces are accessible to almost everyone in most big cities, but it wasn’t always that way. Park Maksimir was a pioneer in the late 1700s when it opened as the first public park in eastern Europe. Situated near the center of Zagreb in Croatia, the verdant space is still open today and boasts a vast population of rare birds and plants, two modern children’s playgrounds, a zoological park with over 250 species, and a myriad of paths to just walk around and enjoy nature. The park is popularly known as the “lungs of the city,” a name we think is perfectly fitting!
