Grimshaw Architects recently announced that construction is set to resume on Manhattan’s dazzling daylit Fulton Street Transit Center after a lengthy delay due to budget cuts. The shining four-story structure is topped with a gigantic oculus that floods the interior with daylight, reducing the amount of energy consumed by artificial lighting. The center, which is set to be completed in 2014, will host a retail center and will provide access to 12 subway lines and the World Trade Center PATH station.

Last year thousands of people visited the National 9/11 Memorial as it opened in New York City, however it turns out that the accompanying 9/11 Museum will not be opening anytime soon due to a financial dispute between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Both organizations refuse to pay for the site’s infrastructure costs – which amount to hundreds of millions of dollars – and as a result the museum designed by Snohetta is expected to miss its projected opening date of September 11, 2012.

There’s nothing quite like settling into a comfy seat to read a good book, and it’s even better when your bookshelf doubles as a rocking chair! Designed by Hyunjin Seo from the Seoul-based design group KamKam, ‘The Motion’ is a curvaceous multi-tasking bookcase that also serves as a literary lounge chair. We love how Seo’s clever rocking design saves space and materials that would otherwise be used for two separate pieces of furniture – and it seems a lot more stable than the rolling bookshelves that we’ve seen in the past.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away – but you may want to steer clear of apple juice, as a new study by Consumer Reports shows that many juice brands contain unsafe levels of arsenic. Although federal limits exist for the amount of arsenic allowable in bottled water, there are no such limits for juice – and the National Center for Health Statistics database has shown that repeated exposure to the toxic substance (even at low levels) can cause serious health problems. This week Levi‘s invited Inhabitat to their San Francisco HQ to celebrate their first collection of products made with Better Cotton. The initiative is working with 40,000 farmers to produce cotton using less water and chemicals while raising labor standards and income levels – and 2 million pairs of Levi’s jeans made with Better Cotton are already on store shelves! Since 95% of Levi’s products are made from cotton, this initiative has tremendous potential if they’re able to scale it up – read on for a closer look.
