Richard Buckminster Fuller is considered by some to be the grandfather of the American green movement – an avid inventor and professor, “Bucky” is credited as the first designer to introduce the geodesic dome to the American landscape. Fuller’s own dome-shaped house in Illinois is an educational tool that students have enjoyed for years, however it has experienced its fair share of wear and tear after decades of use and it’s in need of a renovation. Thankfully, the Fuller building has just won the Save America’s Treasure Federal Matching Grant of $125,000, which will go towards its restoration. The grant will match each and every dollar donated to the Fuller Dome Home up to $125,000 – and each $100 donation underwrites a specific triangle of the dome’s structure, giving contributors a chance to support a piece of green design history. Milan Design Week is still more than a month away, but we’re already excited about one eco design set to be unveiled at this year’s show – Panasonic’s dynamic  “Photosynthesis” courtyard installation. The company commissioned Japanese architect Akihisa Hirata to create a high-tech ecosystem out of their solar-powered consumer electronics and green gadgets. Part of the fair’s interactive and experimental Interni Legacy exhibit, the Panasonic courtyard will compare our technological need for the sun to a plant’s process of photosynthesis.

These amazing Himalaya Water Towers are designed to stem the impact of global warming by collecting and storing water, helping to regulate the use of our planet’s most precious natural resource. The towers are set up on spiraling tendrils that ensure they are able to meet the water needs of nearby villages as well as distant locales as the world’s needs evolve. Conceived by Zhi Zheng, Hongchuan Zhao, and Dongbai Song, this cluster of futuristic towers tucked high and away in the massive Asian mountain range recently took top prize in the eVolo Skyscraper Competition.

Japanese scientist and music lover, Shigeyoshi Osaki, has discovered that spider silk can be spun into much more the pesky cobwebs. After studying the eight-legged creepers and their silky habits for over 30 years at the Nara Medical Univeristy, Osaki found that the silk can actually be twisted into violin stings. Stronger and more agile than steel, nylon, and gut, the spider silk strings may be the future of violin mechanics. And as for sound, a seasoned violinist strapped the silk strands to a Stradivarius and played Tchaikovsky just as beautifully, if not better, than with more traditional string materials.

Named for the Hindi for the word “sky,” this dynamic Aakash skyscraper concept is an incredible tree-like structure that branches out above the city of Mumbai. Designed by British team Lemire Abdul Halim Chehab, Suraj Ramkumar Suthar, and Swapnil Sanjay Gawande, the futuristic scraper is a unique and sustainable answer to the pollution and overcrowding of India’s largest metropolis, supplying it with solar power collected by its lofty canopy. The high-flying concept was recently recognized with an honorable mention in the eVolo Skyscraper competition.

The Environmental Protection Agency‘s decision to give the Energy Star program a bit of a makeover is not sitting pretty with their industry partners – the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is up in arms with the EPA’s choice to not only loosen the Energy Star certification criteria, but also introduce new third party fees. The Energy Star program sets the standards for energy-efficient products in homes, offices, and buildings all over America, however these changes could tarnish their industry-leading reputation.

It’s no surprise we are big LEGO fans here at Inhabitat – the iconic building blocks can be used to create everything from cameras and furniture to apartments and massive cathedrals. Now the toy maker is making headlines again by investing $500 million into green energy. Denmark-based LEGO will buy almost a third of a brand new German offshore wind power project planned by DONG Energy company. The investment will account for 32% of the 277 megawatt Borkum Riffgund wind farm 35 miles off the Northwest coast of Germany. This pricey move will not only help power the German grid, but will hopefully supply nearly all of LEGO’s energy needs with wind power.

Meet Paris Shellton – a classy crustacean who recently received a colorful new 3D printed shell thanks to Markerbot’s Project Shellter! Last year, Makerbot called out to the 3D printing world for eco-friendly replacement shells that could be given to domestic hermit crabs in order to preserve the ocean’s shell supply. Months later, the aptly named Project Shellter has taken off with a line of colorful and funky plastic shell homes for pet hermit crabs.

The tiny Swiss ski town of Tenna recently put itself on the map with the world’s first solar wing-powered chair lift! While solar-powered lifts are popping up in ski resorts all over the world, this is the only one with a string of photovoltaic “wings” that float on a string above the lift chairs all the way up the mountain. The little lift is quite popular – it shuttles 800 skiers an hour – and its solar wings dot the white slops with their unique shape, bringing new meaning to the term “black diamond.”
