In today’s world, where a shift from large scale agribusiness to smaller scale, localized growing can be seen, ideas such as hydroponics and aquaponics have begun to take hold in the urban environment. However, we won’t be the first generation to have considered these possibilities. Indeed, hydroponics could possibly be attributed to Aztec cultures, but in Myanmar a large scale traditional hydroponics system can be located and is still being used today at Lake Inle. Here at Inhabitat we’ve showcased thousands of green building and sustainable landscaping projects that save water, conserve energy, and minimize waste. But did you know just how much more efficient building green can be? Back in 2004 a project called Garden / Garden launched in Santa Monica to compare how different sustainable building methods stacked up against more traditional plans. The project tracked two neighboring houses and recorded data on water use, labor required, waste produced and other relevant information – and it found that the green house used one fifth the water, produced only a third the amount of waste and required about a quarter of the labor to maintain.

Three social-minded urban gardeners saw an unfortunate problem in their community of Nantes: gardening is pretty difficult for those in wheelchairs. So to help the wheelchair-bound flex their green thumbs more easily, these inspired individuals created the Terraform, a series raised garden beds that put planting within arms reach. Using materials close at hand, the team built a simple prototype using the casing of an old cathode ray television combined with some old pallets. The design proved so successful, they’re now promoting Terraform to a wider audience.

A success story in times of crisis is always a pleasure, and this 22-acre Community Farm in Bristol has boosted for the local region in many ways. Landowner Luke Hasell teamed up with local food producers, and using an unusual Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) business model the team managed to get a fully organic, not-for-profit farm up and running. The CSA invited local restaurants and businesses to invest in the project at the outset, and in return they are guaranteed fresh, organic local produce year after year.

The Nemesis is the UK´s first electric super car – and it’s currently gearing up to break the UK´s electric car land speed record! The brainchild of Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, the Nemesis is powered entirely by renewable energy from the Ecotricity network. The UK’s fastest recorded top speed for an EV currently stands at 137 mph – set by the Electric Bluebird, driven by the grandson of legendary speed-merchant and pioneer Sir Malcolm Campbell. The Nemesis team is confident that they will top that when the official record attempt takes place on the 27th of September.
