A huge tornado more than one mile wide touched down in Oklahoma Monday afternoon, flattening a community of 41,000 south of Oklahoma City and killing roughly 91 people. Eye witnesses report that the tornado, which has received a preliminary rating of four out of five on the Enhanced Fujita Scale and reached wind speeds of up to 200mph, tossed around cars during its 20 mile journey, crushed homes and ripped apart buildings – including two schools. Twenty children are among the dead and scores more were rushed to various hospitals with injuries. This tornado is the worst to hit the suburb since 1999 and officials from the National Weather Service warn that more could be on their way. As if the oceans are not struggling enough with climate change, pollution and overfishing, the United Nation’s International Seabed Authority (ISA) has issued 17 prospecting licenses for state and private companies eager to dig up the ocean floor. The ISA has published a report evaluating the impact that mining the sea bed to extract about mineral rich “nodules” amid “an unprecedented surge of interest,” according to The BBC. And they are frank to note that there will be “inevitable environmental consequences.”

MOKO Architects just unveiled plans for a diving and skydiving center constructed out of two abandoned silos and a series of staggered shipping containers. The ten story multi-purpose recreation center will be built out of existing silos located in the Żerań industrial area just 12 km outside of Warsaw’s nucleus.

The glaciers atop Mt. Everest are melting at an unprecedented rate and anthropogenic global warming is likely to blame. The news comes on the heels of reports that CO2 levels have reached their highest in human history, surpassing the 400 parts per million mark, and climate change is shifting the location of the North and South Poles. Researchers from the University of Milan say that ice coverage on top of Earth’s highest mountain has shrunk by 13 percent in the last five decades.

The giant rubber duck that recently sailed into Hong Kong has deflated into an oversize floating blob overnight, CNN reports. At first Harbor City officials didn’t respond to queries about the demise of Florentjin Hofman’s quirky art bird, but a tweet later in the day alluded to its need for a little tune up. Hong Kong was expecting the 54-foot-tall rubber duck to bob on the waters of Victoria harbor until June 9th, 2013.

Although they would be significantly less efficient than conventional solar cells made with either amorphous silicon or cadmium telluride, these new plasmonic-enhanced photovoltaic solar cells containing metal nanoparticles are less costly to produce and can be applied to much bigger surfaces.

The United States Supreme Court has ruled unanimously in favor of Monsanto in a seed patenting case against an Indiana farmer that some had hoped would break the company’s monopoly on modern agriculture. Monsanto sued Vernon Bowman after he purchased their Roundup Ready Soybeans from a grain elevator to plant a late second crop, The Guardian reports. Bowman argued that the patent was exhausted since he bought the seeds from a third party, but the corporate giant said he had agreed not to save any of the harvest for replanting when he entered into a contract to purchase their seeds. Justice Elena Kagan agreed that patent exhaustion did not apply in this case and the court ordered Bowman to pay $84,456.

After news broke last week that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have officially passed the 400 parts per million mark, a leading economist and researcher warned that hundreds of millions of people will become climate refugees in the coming decades. The head of Grantham Institute for Climate Change, Lord Stern warned that mass migrations will occur as a result of climate change, which will exacerbate desertification and cause entire continents to experience crop failure.
