By now, you’ve probably heard of the High Line, but did you know that there is also an underground park called the LowLine proposed for downtown Manhattan? It may have seemed like a pipe dream at first but with many residents backing the project and New Yorkers in awe of what a subterranean park could mean for the city, the LowLine is picking up speed and could soon bring an amazing new public space (not to mention added revenue for the city) to the Lower East Side . Inhabitat’s very own Editor-in-Chief, Jill Fehrenbacher, recently caught up with the LowLine team, James Ramsey and Dan Barasch, to pick their brains about what could be New York’s next design landmark. We never realized that lamps could go to the dark side, but apparently they can if they’re made by Brooklyn-based Dog Tag Designs. The furniture design studio has a penchant for taking unique objects (like this Darth Vader bust) and turning them into tables, light fixtures and more. Dog Tag will be at BKLYN Designs 2013 this Friday – but if you can’t wait until then, here’s a little preview of what they’ll be bringing to the show.

Inhabitat is reporting live from the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference today, where Verizon just announced a massive $100 million solar and fuel cell energy project that will provide power to 19 of its U.S. facilities. The project is expected to be complete next year, and it’s poised to generate more than 70 million kilowatt-hours of electricity – that’s enough to power more than 6,000 single-family homes each year.

New York City was looking forward to seeing One World Trade Center become the tallest building in the western hemisphere this morning, but unfortunately, the plans were scrapped due to high winds. While we were a bit crestfallen to hear the news, we’re looking forward to seeing the Freedom Tower reach its final height of 1,776 ft. at a later (and safer) date.

The death toll at the horrific garment factory collapse that occurred earlier this week has now risen to 340. According to the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights, 80% of the factory’s workers were young women aged between 18 and 20. As upsetting as it’s been to watch, we’ve been following the news on Ecouterre, as well as investigating how consumers can express to the big name brands that make their clothes at the factory that the working conditions that led to the casualties is absolutely unacceptable.
