Bake Me a Cake: Morten Jonas' Playful 'Cake Display' Lamps Are Made by Bergen Prison Inmates
At first glance, you may notice that these contemporary lamps are fashioned from glass cake display cases – but you probably wouldn’t guess that they’re made by a social prison project in Norway. Morten Jonas‘ inventive “Bake Me a Cake” lamps are manufactured entirely by inmates in Bergen Prison. According to Jonas, the objective of this unusual collaboration is to support “high quality design production inside of Norwegian prisons, where we challenge the inmates’ thoughts and actions”, while also encouraging inmates to engage in meaningful activities.”
Morten Jonas‘ “Bake Me a Cake” lamps are constructed from oak wood and smoked tinted glass – so they’re perfect for ambient lighting. They’re designed to be simple to use – changing the bulb is as easy as lifting up the lid! According to Northern Lighting, the project’s name comes from a traditional cartoon story called “The cake with the file”, in which a mother bakes a file inside a cake for her imprisoned son to help him escape.
