This breathtaking wooden hen house was designed by Torsten Ottesjö, who was inspired by the shape of a mother hen spreading her wings to protect her young. The wooden 'Hönshus-1' is located on the west coast of Sweden and built on a steel foundation that is drilled into a sloping rock. Its residents are probably some of the luckiest hens around, as the house is perched gracefully on a site that looks out over an inlet and is surrounded by sea views.
The design is the second in Torsten’s series of biomorphic structures that transform ideas from nature and are based on improvisation. His simple concept is also complimented by the more complex idea of programming a natural light rhythm within the house. As hens are so often ‘cooped up’ and badly treated, this amazing space offers a unique alternative for the feathered creatures, incorporating a healthier natural rhythm into their environment.
