Gallery: Beautiful Rolling Roof Garden Tops off NYC Studio and Penthous...

What was once a couple of dull low-rise brick buildings in the heart of the West Village in New York City, is now an extraordinary greenscape that enhances the neighborhood views. Designed by Caliper Studio, this studio and apartment is a beautiful retrofit complete with a penthouse emerging from the garden roof. This sexy redo is just as smart because it is also energy efficient.

The rooftop garden is an extraordinary green space. A green swatch in a tapestry of weathered brick, highlighted by the rolling hill seems perfectly natural in local context. A gentle plank path exits the penthouse apartment and meanders though a sculpture garden of Roy Lichtenstiens. The effect was created by combining two separate building roofs at different elevations into one continuous system.

The green space clearly adds to the visual impact for the neighbors whom overlook the space, and the expansive green also helps to reduce the heat island effect, cooling the area down in summer time. The green roof also gives to the New York City sewer system, relieving some of the stress related to seasonal effluent storm water, reducing runoff from the roof .

Fantastic design. Introducing green space into the city is always welcome. Coupled with the sustainable benefits this is a wonderful idea that hopefully will spark similar designs.
